Getting around

Steam ships slashed river travel times

Before steam packets, a boat trip from Gainsborough to Hull could take four to seven days; by 1833, a steam packet could travel the 104-mile return journey in a single day.

At the table

Tea viewed as medicine, not drink

What people wore

Pannonian peasant menswear

Ordinary peasants in the Pannonian region wore trousers with wide legs and shirts worn over their belts, often covering their legs with cloth wraps called obojci and wearing opanci with wide caps. In winter, they added short vests, coats with braid decorations, and long white woolen cloaks.

Music

Silent dances and bowed instruments in Croatia

In the Dinaric highland region, the nijemo kolo, or Silent Circle Dance, was a typical dance performed in large steps and leaps without any musical accompaniment. Conversely, in the Adriatic zone, rural dances like the linđo were performed to the sound of the lijerica, a three-stringed bowed instrument.

Daily life

Daily water collection labor

Water was carried by women in wooden containers (30-50 liters) from distant wells or ponds to the home.
