What people wore
Around 1500–1524Simple Footwear for Everyday Life
Ordinary city dwellers and peasants often wore naginės, which were simple, plain-soled shoes made from a single piece of animal skin, and they frequently wrapped cloth around their shins and feet for protection.
Daily life
Around 1500–1524Water-driven mills and cash dues
Manor mills were water-driven and situated on streams; some, known as spring mills, only operated during flood seasons in spring and autumn. Peasants sometimes commuted their labour requirements for a payment of 12 groshi.
Work
Around 1500–1524Peasant Labor Obligations and Communal Work
Peasants commonly owed two days of labor per week to the manor, a system known as tyaglo, with working hours fixed from sunrise to sunset. During this time, they also participated in seasonal communal work called talka for intense agricultural tasks.
Music
Around 1500–1524Sacred hymns and folk instruments
Kankles, an archaic string instrument, were believed to have protective spiritual powers and were traditionally crafted by men from mature forest wood. In church, people sang Gregorian chants and the religious hymn Bogurodzica, which was also sung by soldiers before battles.
At the table
Around 1500–1524Fresh fish was a vital supplement
Ordinary people caught and ate a wide variety of fish from local lakes and rivers, including pike, perch, and occasionally sturgeon, as a vital supplement to their diet.
Getting around
Around 1500–1524Slow travel between towns
Travel between towns was slow, and a trip between Vilnius and Kaunas, which today takes under ninety minutes, required an entire day in the 16th century. Travelers often avoided moving at night to reduce the risk of getting lost or driving off the road.
What it cost
Around 1500–1549Rising prices of livestock
During the 16th century, the price of common livestock such as cows tripled and pigs doubled due to a period of significant price increases.
