What people wore
Leather scarcity forced many to go barefoot
Leather was so scarce that it was often prioritized for protective aprons, leading many people to go barefoot from snowmelt until late autumn to save their shoes. Some individuals even applied layers of tar to the soles of their feet to endure walking on rough terrain.
Daily life
Fetching and heating water
Water for the household had to be fetched from a spring before dark, as it was considered unlucky or unsafe to do so at night. If water needed to be warmed for tasks, a glowing ember was sometimes dropped directly into the bucket.
In the news1846
In 1846, the centuries-old craft guild system was abolished, allowing for freedom of enterprise.
Music
Norwegian folk songs and cattle calls
In Norway, ordinary people sang medieval ballads, songs about trolls and fairy tale characters, and lullabies, while also using cattle calls to communicate across distances. Cattle calls used a unique technique with a raised larynx to produce high, penetrating tones audible up to 5 kilometers away.
In Europe1845–1852
Potato blight ruined harvests: a million Irish people died and a million more emigrated, many to America.
Getting around
Horse-drawn post transport and equipment
Travelers often hired horse-drawn transport at regulated post stations spaced approximately 11 km apart, and they were advised to carry their own whip, as it was rarely provided.
