State Peasant Resettlement Begins in 1805
In 1805, the government launched a systematic state-sponsored resettlement policy, moving thousands of land-starved state peasants from crowded areas to borderland provinces with new tax exemptions.
Getting around
Variable speeds of land travel
Travel speeds were generally slow, averaging about 50 to 70 kilometers a day, though elite couriers or royal carriages could achieve much higher speeds, sometimes reaching 18 kilometers per hour on favorable routes. During winter, sleighs often moved faster than wheeled vehicles on the packed snow and ice.
At the table
Meat as a rare luxury
Meat was a luxury for many families, typically consumed only on major religious holidays like Christmas and Easter.

What people wore
Lifelong festive peasant clothing
A peasant family would prepare a festive outfit meant to last a lifetime, which was stored carefully and worn only on the most important holidays.
Music
Large communal round dances called khorovod
Ordinary people held khorovods, which were large communal round dances that could involve up to one hundred participants. These dances were often accompanied by a cappella singing, though in some southern regions, they featured instruments like small reed pipes called zhaleika, pan-flutes known as kugikly, and horns called rozhok.
Daily life
Lighting in the home
Peasant huts were illuminated by a torch inserted into the stove's crack or by simple oil lamps with wicks. In better-off homes, candles were used when oil lamps were unavailable.
